GTIN suggestions and autocomplete in Shopify admin

Roipas Editorial Team

Shopify checks barcodes that look like GTINs against GS1 records and offers suggestions for new and saved barcodes.

A GTIN is the global product number behind many retail barcodes. Shopify now checks barcodes against GS1 records to provide GTIN suggestions and autocomplete in product management.

GTIN checks for new barcodes

When you add a new barcode that looks like a GTIN, Shopify searches the GS1 registry. If the GTIN is registered with GS1, Shopify marks the barcode as a GTIN and highlights the change.

Suggestions for saved barcodes

For saved custom barcodes that look like GTINs, Shopify suggests changing the type to GTIN. You can accept or dismiss the suggestion.

For barcodes registered to a product in GS1, hover over the barcode to compare your vendor and product name with the GS1 record. This is for information only; you don't need to change your product title, vendor, or description to match it.

Bulk editing and saving

In the products and inventory bulk editors, you can accept or dismiss all GTIN suggestions at once. These checks don't prevent you from saving barcodes.

GTIN suggestions let you compare and manage barcodes using GS1 records; whether to accept a suggestion is up to you.
