Shopify Flow updates permissions for testing and turning on workflows
Shopify Flow now follows staff permissions in the Shopify admin. Staff need the permissions required by every step of a workflow to test or turn it on.
Shopify Flow now uses the permissions managed for staff in the Shopify admin. Previously, a single Flow app permission allowed staff to perform all actions in Flow.
Flow access and workflow permissions
Access to Flow is set by the “View, create, and delete automations” and “Manage connections and secrets” permissions under Settings > Users > Roles. Flow also checks each workflow against a staff member’s other admin permissions.
To test or turn on a workflow, staff need the permissions required by each of its steps. For example, the “Add customer tags” action requires the Edit customers permission.
What happens when staff lack a required permission?
Staff without a permission required by a workflow can still open Flow, build and edit workflows, and save drafts. However, they can’t test, turn on or turn off that workflow, apply changes to it, run it manually, or cancel or retry its runs.
They also can’t see data they don’t have permission to view, such as sample data, test results, and workflow run details. Flow displays a message explaining why a feature is unavailable.
Workflows already turned on keep running
Workflows that were already turned on continue to run.
With this change, staff actions in Flow are limited by their admin permissions, and testing or turning on a workflow depends on the permissions its steps require.
