Shopify inventory reports will now show on-hand quantity

Roipas Editorial Team

Starting October 1, 2026, Shopify’s inventory analytics models will measure stock by the total quantity on hand at a location instead of the available quantity.

Shopify is changing the stock measure used in its inventory reports. The new approach includes all units physically held at a location, not just those available for sale.

On-hand quantity vs. available quantity

On-hand quantity includes every unit physically at a location, including units committed to open orders and units that are currently unavailable. Available quantity includes only units that can be sold.

What will change in inventory reports?

From October 1, 2026, reports powered by these models will reflect on-hand quantity. As a result, reported inventory may be higher than before by the number of committed and unavailable units.

The change applies to ShopifyQL queries using “FROM inventory” or “FROM inventory by location” and to reports powered by these models. These include reports on product sell-through, days of inventory remaining and daily product sales; inventory adjustments, ABC product analysis, month-end inventory value and snapshot, and inventory transfer orders and shipments.

Historical inventory data

Past data will not change. Reports dated before September 1, 2026 will continue to show available quantity, so historical values and trends for that period will remain the same.

In short, from October 1, 2026, Shopify’s affected inventory reports will show the total stock physically held at a location instead of only stock available for sale.
