Waiving outstanding order balances in Shopify
Shopify now lets you waive amounts you don’t plan to collect from an order, remove existing waived amounts, and track write-offs with new reporting.
Shopify has added new ways to manage order balances that won’t be collected. These actions are available from the order page, and waived amounts are also handled during adjustments and reporting.
Waiving and adjusting order balances
If you choose not to collect payment, you can waive an order’s payable balance from the payment card on the order page. You can also remove an existing waived amount from the same page.
During order editing, refunds, and returns processing, Shopify adjusts existing waived amounts when needed. If the order total falls below the waived amount, Shopify reverses only the excess, starting with the oldest waived amount.
Buyer visibility and staff permissions
Where applicable, waived balances appear on buyer-facing surfaces, including customer accounts, checkout, and email notifications.
Staff need the new “Waive order balances” Admin permission to perform this action. High-privilege roles, such as Store admin, have the permission enabled by default.
Reporting on waived amounts
New write-off metrics and dimensions help track waived balances. The new default report, “Write-offs by order,” is available on all stores.
With this update, Shopify users can manage balances they don’t intend to collect, control staff access to the action, and report on waived amounts.
