New protection against unexpected redirects in Shopify
Shopify stores can ask customers to confirm before sending them to websites outside the store. Links to websites identified as malicious are blocked.
A Shopify online store update changes how links to websites outside the store are handled. The action depends on the status of the destination website.
Confirmation for external links
When a customer is sent to a website outside the store, they see a short message with the website’s address. They can continue to the site or return to the store.
Customers are asked to confirm for websites Shopify identifies as suspicious. Links to websites identified as malicious are blocked, while other external websites open without a message.
Domains that do not trigger a message
Domains connected to the store, along with supported Shopify and social websites, do not trigger the confirmation message.
A website owned by the merchant but not connected to the store may still trigger it.
With this update, messages for external redirects depend on Shopify’s classification of the destination website and whether its domain is connected to the store.
